Thanks
to David Heaton from Pennsylvania, who submitted the above picture. David tells us the picture
is of a business in Sherwood many moons ago called Newman's Drug Store,
early 1900's? The photo was given to him by his great-grandmother, Maye
Miller, and often spoke of her husband who worked at Newman's Drug Store. We have started to research
Newman's Drug Store to find
where this business was locate in it's time, within downtown Sherwood.
We
thought maybe the store was located next to the old Bee Hive which was
started by Elwood Mohley. A call to John Wirth verified that his former
store, Wirth's Super-Value, formerly the Bee Hive, was once 2 stores. Elwood
had bought the store just south of him to expand the Bee Hive, but was not
sure of what the business was. Was this where Newman's Drug store was
located?
Well
after getting a second email from David with
the picture below, it looks like the store was located where
A & A Appliance now resides, DeRoseett's
corner, and the Bee Hive looks to be south of that, or to the
left!

A
Sherwood Scrapbook, Vol 1, speaks of a gentleman by the name of
Jas. H. Miller, a druggist, who carried
a complete line of drugs, medicines, stationary, wall paper along with a
line of hardware, but does not speak of his location. The Miller name has
been associated with some of the founding fathers of Sherwood.
Research at the Sherwood Library submitted
by David Guilford yields the following information from a Don C. Miller
column in The Chronicle: "Jas. H. Miller, the druggist (later sold to W.C.
Newman) carries a complete line of drugs, medicines, stationery, wall paper,
etc." -- this was a look at Sherwood businesses in 1899. The Miller Drug
Store was located in the newly-built Openlander Building on the southwest
corner of Harrison and Vine streets. There were three storefronts -- Miller
Hardware to the north, Hoberger Shoe Store in the middle (Mr. Hoberger later
constructed the building which would house the Bee Hive and is called
appropriately the Hoberger Block; he then vacated his storefront in the
Openlander Building) and the Miller Drug Store was the south (third)
storefront from the corner.
Early into the 1900's Mr. Miller sold
his drug store to the young William C. Newman. In the accompanying photo,
you may read the word "DRUGS" on the awning and you are correct that it is
the current location of A&A Appliance. In 1934, Mr. Newman purchased the
store on the southeast corner of Harrison and Vine (the Kuhl Block and the
storefront immediately north of the Sherwood Library). The photo from Mr.
Heaton is almost certainly the drug store when it was on the west side of
the street and shortly before the 1934 move to the east side of the street.

Dan Hasch went on to inform us that he has a
few pictures of Newman's Drug Store before it was remodeled. The inside
picture on the website looks like it was taken at the second location of the
store, on the corner and across the street. Dan has included a retyping of
an article written by Don Miller in the Sherwood
Chronicle in the 1960's. It should give you some information about the drug
store. READ MORE

Dan says would really be nice to know who the people are in the pictures.
If you have any more info on Newman's Drug
Store or Miller's Drug Store that was once a thriving Sherwood business in the early 1900's
to late 60's, please
send it my way,
webmaster@sherwoodohio.com , and we will keep you informed on our
research, thanks again David for your photo submission.
