Our Ministry
Sherwood United Methodist Church had its beginnings
in the early 1800's. During the next 70 years the Moats Methodist
and the Evangelical Reformed Churches joined with the Sherwood
Methodist to worship at the church at the corner of Rock and Elm
Streets. In 1955 it was realized that a new building was needed. In
February of 1955 the membership voted to purchase the present site.
Ground was broken April 17, 1955 and the cornerstone was laid on
October 23, 1955. In 1988 remodeling was done to enclose the court
yard for more rooms, pews were cushioned, and ramps and a
handicapped accessible restroom were added.
Over the years church member have realized how
important it is to be involved in the community to share Christ in
both our ministry and in our lives. Ministries within the church
include worship, prayer breakfasts, Bible Study and prayer. Outreach
programs include Community Breakfast, Mission Group Circle
activities, Tots for Tomorrow Preschool, active participation in
Central Shares Christmas and a food pantry. Community involvement
includes being an emergency center, a voting location, a meeting
place for groups like Sherwood Business-Professional Women, Girl
Scouts, Defiance County Habitat for Humanity and others.
We read in Acts 2:43 "They devoted themselves to the
apostle's teaching and to the fellowship, in the breaking of bread
and to prayer." This Bible verse gives a foundation for our mission
statement. "We are a community church dedicated to serving and
sharing Christ through Worship, Christian Education, Music and
Social Outreach."
By being faithful to God in our ministry we pray that
God will continue to empower us as a church to make disciple for
Jesus Christ.
